Who we are

A small Tasmanian outfit that does one thing properly.

Island Double Glazing is run by Michael out of Sorell. He works alongside Jess, who handles most of the quoting and the back and forth, and Alex, who is on the tools with him. That is the whole operation, and it is deliberately that way. The person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it.

In their own words, they are specialists in retro fit outs using double glazed thermally broken aluminium and Designer Line aluminium, and they work in aluminium and uPVC alike. In plainer terms: if your place is cold, damp at the windows, or noisy from the road, they can fix that without you moving out.

Before and after

Drag the handle. This is what a retrofit actually looks like.

Every photograph on this page was taken by us, on our own jobs. Nothing here is a stock picture of somebody else's house.

Old timber sashes, paint lifting off the sill and daylight through the gap, replaced with a black framed double glazed unit.

Timber frames stripped back and made good, then a new door and sidelight set in with obscure glazing.

What we do

Windows, doors and glass. Aluminium and uPVC.

Some of it is a whole new window. Some of it is one cracked pane in a frame that is otherwise fine. We are happy to do either, and we will tell you honestly which one your place needs.

    Retrofit double glazing

Our speciality. We take the old windows out of a house that is already lived in, and put double glazing in their place. No knocking the place about, no waiting on a new build. Just warmer, quieter rooms in the home you already have.

  • 02

    Thermally broken aluminium

Aluminium frames with an insulating break through the middle, so the cold outside stops travelling through the frame into your room. It is the difference between a frame that runs with condensation on a Tasmanian morning and one that does not.

  • 03

    Designer Line aluminium

Slim, modern sightlines in double glazing, for when you want as much glass and as little frame as possible. Black, white or anything between.

  • 04

    uPVC windows and doors

We specialise in aluminium and uPVC both. uPVC is the quieter, warmer option again, and it suits a lot of Tasmanian homes beautifully.

  • 05

    Sliding and entry doors

Double sliding doors, hinged entry doors, matching glazed sidelights. We have replaced plenty of tired timber doors with new ones that seal properly and look like they were always meant to be there.

  • 06

    Glass replacement and repair

Not every job is a whole new window. We reglaze existing frames, including obscure and frosted panels for bathrooms, trim frames back with new aluminium angle where they need it, and finish with proper silicone jointing.

Not sure which of those you need?

Michael will come and look at it, and tell you straight.

About

Michael, Jess and Alex.

Michael Garland runs Island Double Glazing as an Australian sole trader out of Sorell. Jess does the quoting and keeps people in the loop. Alex is on site with Michael. Between them, that is who comes to your house, and it is the same three people every time.

Customers keep mentioning the same handful of things in their reviews, and they are not accidents: fair pricing said up front, floors covered before anyone starts, the mess cleaned up at the end, and a phone that gets answered. One customer put it as “nothing better than supporting a small family owned Tasmanian business”, which is a fair description of what this is.

Every one of them is five stars. Here they are, word for word.

Michael and his team replaced our double sliding door and were fantastic from start to finish. Their pricing was fair, communication was easy, and the turnaround was incredibly quick. The quality of workmanship was outstanding, the finished result honestly looks even better than we imagined. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them and will definitely use them again. Nothing better than supporting a small family owned Tasmanian business.

From the very first visit to quote, Michael and Jess were professional, approachable and provided lots of advice and guidance. Our new doors went in yesterday, replacing old wooden doors and they are so stunning. Michael and Alex did an amazing job. The finish is perfect, they took time on the details and the workspace was left spotless. There was a glitch with the lock (no fault of Michael) and he fixed without issue and immediately. Love the customer service provided 🩵 Will be having further work done this year and cannot recommend these guys highly enough.

My new windows look amazing, and at a reasonable cost. The process was very smooth - excellent communication and attention to detail. Mick and Alex were very respectful of my home ( ensuring floors were protected. The space was left clean and tidy). Highly recommend.

Had Michael look at some home made frosted glass panels in our bathrooms which had seen better days. And as some of them had been installed in unusual fashion, I couldn't see how the glass could be replaced, or the aluminium frames ever made good. So a reasonably difficult project, but Michael was confident it could all be sorted. 5 panels of glass replaced, several frames trimmed with new aluminium angle, and then some very skilful silicon jointing. What a fantastic result from the crew at Double Island Glazing. Could not recommend them more highly, very satisfied 😊
